2011 SVPCamp: Session 3 | Agile Product Management

This session was by far the most relevant with respect to the challenges I’m working through at this point in time. I’m currently working through an agile framework for the Analytic Platform and Delivery product organization at eBay. I’m trying to map the old waterfall processes to the new agile processes. I’m also working with a colleague (Patrick Hildebrand) to both identify and define milestones and deliverables across product planning and release planning.

The goals are to ensure 1.) That all of the APD product owners can consistently define their product road maps, 2.) That product teams can accurately plan and efficiently coordinate multi-project product releases, and 3.) That all levels of the APD product organization can efficiently report out on both the project and release dimensions.

2011 SVPCamp: Session 2 | Innovation Jam

Not what I expected in terms of agile…It’s not the SCRUM methodology like my team has been inudated with over the last month. This was a presentation about a company’s experience with an agile exercise. It was basically a hybrid of Hack-a-thon and Skunkworks activities at eBay.

It was interesting to learn that the objectives of this effort were not based on delivering finished products (that will come later). Even the benefit of identifying and refining new product ideas was secondary. The biggest benefit seemed to be that people had an opportunity to working new areas and with new technologies.

2011 SVPCamp: Session 1 | Analytics-Driven Products

I like listening to Andy. I’ve had a chance to interact with him several times over the last year and I’m convinced he’s usually the smartest guy in the room.

His presentation covered a breadth of interesting topics. The big take away for me was the importance of robust client-side tracking and the need for well-structured Document Object Models (DOM). This further validates the vision my team is working to bring to life at eBay.

I thought his take on identifying qualitative feedback from customers in an opt in way was also very interesting. I need to follow up to see how he’s utilizing this data. This ties into a take away from the eMetrics Conference a couple weeks back in that the Voice of the Customer (VoC) approach is something we need to standardize, scale, and incorporate into more of our self-service analytic solutions.
